As the weather warms up so does water and appliance usage. It’s time to turn your attention to how you can get your house ready for the summer months.
- Clean your gutters and downpipes Gutters filled with leaves and other debris leave your home at an increased risk this bushfire season. Have someone clean your gutters to not only keep your home safe, but to ensure you capture as much water as possible to fill your tanks.
- Check your taps, pipes and sprinklers for leaks With more water being used over summer than any other time of year, it is important to check for damage and leaks to ensure you are not only saving water, but decreasing your water bill. There may be leaks you are unaware of – especially in hoses and sprinklers that haven’t been used in a while. Make sure there is no water dripping out from or around the connections, especially when a fixture is not in use. If you detect a leaky fixture or pipe, and water accumulating in places it shouldn’t be or you can hear the sound of running water constantly – it is best to contact your plumber.
- Have your air conditioning serviced Can you picture it now? You’re in the midst of a 40 degree heat wave and the cooling in your home suddenly stops working. Avoid this situation by having your air conditioner serviced to ensure it is in working order for the hot summer ahead. Have the evaporation pads checked to ensure they are good quality to provide high efficiency air conditioning and have your plumber check that the dump valve and solenoid valve are working correctly and that the unit is clean.
- Heading away on holiday
If you are planning on escaping for a much needed family holiday over the summer months, there are a few things you should consider before your departure to lower your bills and protect against a plumbing emergency. Shut off your water at the main valve. If nothing in or outside of the home requires water while you are away, protect yourself from any expensive accidents by simply switching the main water supply off.Turn off or adjust the settings on your appliances. Lowering the temperature on your water heater and turning off your fridge and air-conditioning can save money on your upcoming bills.
Address leaks and drips. Like we’ve mentioned before, leaks and drips can be costly, but when left unmanaged, they can destroy floors, encourage mould growth, and attract nasty pests.
